Sectional Pitch, Hit, & Run Results

Many of those that qualified through our local competition for the Sectional Pitch, Hit, & Run competition participated in West Sacramento on May 22. Congratulations to Matt Ziegler! Matt won the 7-8 age group with an overall score of 657. He has now qualified for a chance to compete in the Regional competition held at AT&T Park on June 12th prior to the Giants-Reds game that day. Good luck Matt!

Congratulations are also in order to a pair of Minor Division Brewers. Carter Benbrook scored 613 and Carter Murray-Hartley scored 572 to finish in 2nd and 3rd place in the 9-10 age group.

Arden Little League had the strongest representation of any league at the Sectionals. Watch out in 2012!

Major Royals vs. Pirates: May 21, 2011

Royals 9, Pirates 8

Ryan Wiesenfarth drove in the winning run to cap off a thrilling come from behind win for the Royals in a hard fought game with the Pirates. Ted Giberson had three hits, while David Barnett and Hayden Johnson each added two more for the Royals. Barnett also picked up the win by pitching a scoreless sixth inning. Jack Kotal had two hits for the Pirates, while Holden Cave battled hard and pitched five strong innings for the Bucs.

Minor Dodgers vs. Brewers: May 24, 2011

Brewers 22, Dodgers 14

Brewers take care of Dodgers, with great pitching and hitting from Carter Benbrook and timely hitting from Tadewald the Brewers rolled over the Dodgers. The Dodgers try to make it a game in the late innings, but The Brewers were to strong at the end. The Dodgers had key hits from Colin O’donnell and Grant Deary but still not enough.

Minor Cubs vs. Cardinals: May 23, 2011

Cubs 11, Cardinals 7

The Cubs broke out to a 10-0 lead behind strong pitching by Jack Ranker. Ryan Maves had 2 hits and 4 RBI, Jack Cartwright had 3 hits and Jack Ranker had a 3 run home run and a double to the fence. The Cardinals stormed back with key hits by Clayton Townsend adn Casey Honaker. Mike Lee and Natalie Hemond pitched very well to halt the Cubs bats. Matthew Lynch pitched in for the Cards with some excellent defense. Garrett Cook pitched the last two innings for the Cubs to hold off the Cardinal come back. The Cubs were helped by solid defensive plays by Todd Russell, Ryan Maves, Noah Calderon and Jack Cartwright.

Brewers 7, Cubs 6 (7 innings)

Drew Norgaard knocked in the go ahead run for the Brewers in the top of the 7th. Lincoln Tadewald finished up his strong, 3 inning pitching performance by shutting out the Cubs in the bottom half of the inning to preserve the win. Carter Benbrook pitched shutout ball for 3 innings and had a 3 run home run to stake the Brewers to a 5-0 lead. The Cubs came roaring back behind a home run by Mitchell Bugalski and a 3 run triple by Ryan Albiani. Albiani also hit a game tying single in the bottom of the sixth. Ryan Maves, Bugalski and Todd Russell all pitched very well for the Cubs. The game was highlighted by excellent defensive plays on both sides. Jack Cartwright, Garrett Cook, Bugalski and Russell all made spectacular plays for the Cubs. Philip Cloeter and Drake Charamuga made fine defensive plays to help the Brewers hold the lead in the seventh.

Minor Yankees vs. Cardinals: May 21, 2011

Yankees 8, Cardinals 7

Jackson Szejda had two outstanding defensive plays in right field and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 6th inning as the Yankees overcame a strong pitching performance by Cardinals ace John Keeney. The Red Birds were swinging the bats well but the Yankess defense played their best game of the season. Aedan Barnes-Shumway led the Yankees offense with a big two out hit that cleared the bases and helped get the Yanks back in the game. Adam Olsen pitched 3 solid innings of relief to help preserve the win.

Giants, Royals

In a well played major game, the Giants topped the Royals on Wednesday night.  The Royals had a strong, combined pitching performance from Ted Giberson, Jack Flaningham and Nick Snyder.  Ryan Wiesenfarth was solid behind the plate.  The Royals hitting was led by Hayden Johnson (2 hits), Jeremy Matisevich and JP McKeever.  The Giants pitching was led by Ryan Nixon, Billy Moebs and Gavin Benbrook.  Nate Barry played stellar defense and had a solid double.  Miles Edwards had a double and a home run over the left field fence.  Brett Wilson scored twice.

Giants 11, Cubs 6

The Giants finally broke through with their first win of the second half last night. The Giants superb pitching by Sam Balestreri, Jake Leonard and Matthew Kahn and strong defense by Jack Peters and Eliza Wechsler-Azen was enough to hold off the Cubs. The Cubs had strong pitching from Ryan Maves and a great defensive play by Garrett Cook to keep it close. One special note was that the Giants Matthew Kahn almost hit for the cycle, only needing a single to complete. It was a great game for both teams!

Minor Yankees vs. Rays: May 17, 2011

Rays 11, Yankees 6

Thanks to the skills of Robert Bohn and the efforts of the Yankees staff, the Rays and Yanks were able to squeak a game in between rain storms. Led by strong pitching from Jack Koewler, the Yankees kept the Rays to only one run in the first three innings and added run support with hits from Brady Bohn, Aeden Barnes Shumway and Jack Koewler. Things were all tied up at the end of 4 thanks to clutch hits from Mitchell Dixon and Jay Wilson. The Rays were led by the strong pitching of Brooke Furukawa, with great relief from Ryan Young, and Jay (“the beard”) Wilson as the closer. In the end, as the rain started to fall again, the Rays were able to add to their run total while shutting down the Yankees bats.

Major Yankees vs A’s: May 16, 2011

A’s 4, Yankees 3

In what can only be described as very difficult weather conditions, the A’s and Yankees battled in a very well played game. The A’s were led by 5 well pitched innings by Kyle Smith, with a save by Jake Virga. The Yankees received outstanding pitching from Mason Lafond and relieved by Corwin Benskin. The A’s got solid hitting from Brett Moore Clayton Towle and the Yankees bats were lead by Lafond and Benskin.
